Benjamin “Bennie” McRae was born in Aberdeen, North Carolina, and attended Collis P. Huntington High School in Newport News Virginia.  Newport News is a shipbuilding center and Collis P. Huntington was its founder. Huntington High School was a football and track and field powerhouse. McRae attended the University of Michigan where he played halfback on the football team and competed in the hurdles where he was ranked among the best in the country. He was drafted by the Bears in the second round in 1962. He played cornerback for the Bears from 1962 until he was traded to the New York Giants early on in the 1971 season. He retired from football after the 1972 season.

McRae was 6-foot and 180 pounds, an exceptional athlete.  He had 27  career interceptions and his track skills made him hard to catch once he had the ball in his hands. McRae was also a great tackler and played rough. In the Bears 1963 Championship win over the Giants, McRae intercepted a Y. A. Tittle pass. Tittle was hit by Larry Morris just as he threw for the end zone. McRae was named to the Top 100 Greatest Bears of All Time.
