Craig Clemons was born in Sidney Ohio and played football and basketball, and ran track at Piqua High School. He was both a running back and defensive back at Piqua High School. In college, Clemons played football at the University of Iowa. He was a defensive back who excelled and got high marks in play at the Senior Bowl and the Blue-Grey Classic as a Senior. Clemons also returned kicks and punts for Iowa. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1972 Draft. He was 5-foot-11 and weighted 195 pounds. He played safety for the Bears from 1972-1977. He was a hard-hitter, excellent tackler, and when he intercepted the ball, he was a hard man to catch.
