Tom Thayer was born in Joliet, Illinois, and attended Joliet Catholic High School. He played football for the legendary coach, Gordie Gillespie. He went on to Notre Dame where he played all 4 years. He played professional football for 11 years beginning in the USFL and then for the Bears from 1985-1992 as their right offensive guard. Thayer was one of the strongest Bears and he could bench press over 500 pounds (Amazing Tales from the Chicago Bears Sidelines, p. 347). He finished his career with the Miami Dolphins in 1993. He was a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears Championship team that won Super Bowl XX. After his playing career he has enjoyed an extensive media career that has included football commentary and analysis for radio and television. Thayer has been an analysts for 25 years on Bears Radio. Thayer is one of those 1985 Bears players who has helped unite the generations of fans by both his play and his work in the media.
