Bobby Joe Green was born in Vernon, Texas, and went to Bartlesville  High School in Oklahoma (formerly Bartlesville College High School). He made a good impression out on the football team. That led to the University of Florida on a football scholarship. Green was a punter and halfback for the Gators. He was a late round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers, but ended up on the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1960-1961 and then was traded to the Bears where he played from 1962-1973. In the pros, Green spent almost all of his time as a punter and he was an excellent one. Invited to the Pro Bowl in 1970, Green was almost always in the top 10 for punts, punting yardage, and long punts during his career. Green played for the Bears during their 1963 Championship season and was names as one of the Top 100 Bears of All Time.

Green punted 833 times for the Bears for 35,057 yielding 42.1 yards per punt. For his career, Green punted 970 times for the Bears for 41,317 yielding 42.6 yards per punt.

Statistically one of the best, but almost anonymous to many avid Bears fans today; perhaps the Top 100 Bears list will get him some notoriety these days.

Bobby Joe Green played in an era where punters were more likely to make tackles and practiced tackling.
