Sports Faith International Honors Jim Ryan as Virtue of St. Paul Recipient

Jim Ryan was Illinois Attorney General and State’s Attorney. He was also a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion. He fought for abused women, children and crime victims. He is described by the State Journal Register as one of the finest Attorneys General in state history.

Ryan attended Benet Academy (called St. Procopius at the time), Benedictine University, and Chicago Kent College of Law. Ryan create the state’s first Health Care Bureau and the Child Advocacy Center. Ryan and his wife Marie have six children. They lost a child due to an undetected brain tumor and a second child from suicide. Jim and Marie have also fought off serious illness themselves.  In response, the Annie Ryan Run raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Midwest Children’s Brain Tumor Center at Lutheran General. They have worked with Catholic Charities to support families grieving the loss of suicide.  The couple has also counseled other families dealing with hardships.
