All-Madden Team

John Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota, home of Hormel Foods and the Spam Museum. And even though he was raised out west, there was something of his humble Midwest beginnings in his Hall of Fame coaching career and his work on television. He worked with CBS from 1979 through 1993; Fox from 1994 through 2001; in 2002, Madden was on Monday Night Football; and then in 2006 season he worked NBC’s Sunday night NFL games. He retired after Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009, between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In his long career, Madden covered many Bears games. He created the “All-Madden” team, a group of players who Madden thought represented football and played the game as he thought it should be played. The Bears were well-represented in the original 1984 All-Madden Team:

Walter Payton

Richard Dent

Dan Hampton

Al Harris

Steve McMichael

Mike Singletary

Todd Bell
