Patrick Scales has been the Bears’ long snapper for 4 seasons. My sense is that teams don’t change long snapper very often.  In some cases, they are players that last longer than any other player.

Every team in the NFL has a  long snapper. Long snappers are  generally acquired as undrafted free agents. A good long snapper generally goes unnoticed in football. They are noticed only when they have performance problems.

John Wirtel was a long snapper that the Bears brought into camp in 2019 and released. Wertil is a 6-foot-3 250 pound long snapper undrafted free agent. He played for Kansas and before that was on the Mount Carmel High School team in Chicago.  We’ll be watching again this year to see whether Wirtel finds a job in the NFL.
